UNITED WILL REMAIN UNBEATEN Thursday, August 09,2001 |
|
David Beckham has always set his standards high but his latest aim could be his most audacious comment yet. The England skipper is bidding to go an entire season unbeaten, in what will be Sir Alex Ferguson's final year at the Old Trafford helm. That would obviously mean the Reds would surpass their lofty achievements of 1999 the year they won the Premiership, the FA Cup and the European Cup. "To win every trophy we play in would be a fitting last season, wouldn't it? The Premiership, the European Cup, the FA Cup, the Worthington Cup. And to not lose a game all season, Beckham modestly told Manchester United magazine. "Every year, the manager always says: 'We want to go through the whole season without losing a game'. It might be his last year but I don't think he has mellowed one bit. Even when he finishes, he won't be taking his foot off any pedals." "He's told me when I've done things wrong and when I've done things right. More than that, he's given me the confidence to become the player I am." |

Veron takes on Beckham mantle Sunday, August 05,2001 |
|
![]() |
Juan Sebastian Veron has put himself forward as an impressive candidate for David Beckham's most cherished role. The free-kick monopoly United granted to England's captain some years ago could be under threat, for the Argentinian is already starting to justify Sir Alex Ferguson's £28.1 million investment. At Lazio, Veron shared the set-pieces with Sinisa Mihailovic. Here, in the less-vaunted arena of Wrexham's Racecourse Ground and with Beckham absent on approved leave, Veron's destructive right boot brought him his second United goal. Paul Scholes was fouled outside the area after 58 minutes and Veron volunteered instantly for the task. The wall disintegrated as a lethally-struck, 20-yard shot swerved past goalkeeper Kristian Rogers. His global status was underscored by the 40-yard pass which presented Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with United's 31st-minute opener. But in the final ten minutes, Wrexham's Steve Thomas and Andy Morrell scored to peg back their elite rivals. United boss Ferguson said: 'The goal was unbelievable. David Beckham has been sensational over the past two or three years , but it is nice that Veron can give us something different. |
RAVANELLI: PREMIERSHIP IS KING Friday, August 03,2001 |
|
Fabrizio Ravanelli has advised England captain not to leave English Premiership for any other leagues abroad. Italy striker Ravanelli, 32, starting his second stint in English football after his spell with Middlesbrough ended four years ago came back to play for Derby County. Ravanelli said: 'The Premiership is now the most exciting place in Europe. If United were in Serie A, they'd either win it or be very close. They play a Continental style of football which suits Beckham. 'And he should stay there. It is not a question of finance, but what has he got to go to Italy for? You cannot get much bigger than United at the moment and the decision of Juan Sebastian Veron to come over shows that. They can be the biggest if Beckham stays. |

England captain believes his team has bought great players during the summer time. David Beckham, 26, have been impressed with Manchester United's new signings during the East Asian tour and now believes United could not have bought any better players than Ruud van Nistelrooy and Juan Sebastian Veron. United signed Ruud van Nistelrooy and Juan Veron for £47million this summer, and Becks calls them both world class."I think the manager has made two great buys and all the players have said that. I definitely would not swap those two for anyone in the world. So I think that says it all.", he added."They're two world-class players and Ruud has proved it in his first two games scoring three goals and Juan is a great footballer and with his football brain he can do well in any game.""The manager can always do it. He always picks players who can fit straight into the team because we're a tight team with a great team spirit and if anything upsets that then that will be hard to cope with. But the manager always seems to pick the right players and the best players and he's done that with these two." |
WET DEVILS OFF THE RELAX Friday, July 27,2001 |
|
Manchester United ace midfielder David Beckham showed off his skills at Beck-stroke yesterday as he took an early bath with team-mates. Football England Skipper Beckham, 26, and his Manchester United pals turned into soaker stars as they larked about in their hotel pool in Singapore. The Red Devils were relaxing in the sunshine between matches during their Far Eastern pre-season tour.An onlooker said: "Becks seemed really laid-back, just lounging in the pool. He was as happy as a duck in water." Beckham was joined for his dip by an array of international talent.Red goalkeeper Fabien Barthez, 30, and striker Dwight Yorke, 29, laughed as they played with two tiny tots in armbands who swam past them in the water with their mum.Barthez himself caused a splash in United's last game when he played up front and almost scored. The French international came on as a substitute for Dutch hotshot Ruud van Nistelrooy as United romped home 8-1 against a Singapore XI on Tuesday night. But United's record signing, 26-year-old Juan Sebastian Veron, stayed out of the water. The £28.1million Argentinian midfielder preferred to lounge by the pool chatting on his mobile phone. |

Another teenager, who had waited from early morning to catch a glimpse of the United stars, added: "There weren't enough security men to protect him and he was getting pushed and jostled. I thought it was getting pretty serious and held back."Thankfully he got to the bus, but even then fans were chanting and trying to see him. It was mass hysteria." |

World wide Manchester United and David Beckham fans - breathed a huge sigh
of relief when the club confirmed that the
new signing Juan Sebastian Veron is not about to steal the number 7 shirt from
Beckham's back. Veron was in Manchester for his United medical on Wednesday -
and emerged in front of the world's press wearing a number seven
shirt. That sparked rumours that Beckham was at least going to have to
give up his squad number in favour of the new boy or, worse, quit the club
altogether. Fans feared that United were about to tell Beckham: 'come in number
seven, your time is up'. But those fears were laid to rest when kit man Albert
Morgan insisted the shirt was for training purposes only. Morgan revealed that
Veron's official squad number at United would be 23.Beckham will keep
the coveted number seven, but reserve team captain Michael Clegg will have to
give up his number for Veron, who also wore 23 for Lazio. Beckham wears number
25 in training and the club confirmed that training kits bear no relation to
squad numbers. |

Call for Beckham to get Stamped Thursday, June 16,2001 |
|
![]() |
Victoria and David Beckham should adorn the nations postage stamps, according to Peter Jennings of the Royal Philatelic Society. Calling for an end to the convention that places the Queen on the majority of the UK’s stamps, Jennings tells today’s Express newspaper that the celebrity couple could be the key to encouraging contemporary youth to develop an interest in philately. "Popular, ‘cool’ personalities of the moment, like Posh Spice and David Beckham, are needed on Royal Mail stamps of the 21st century to attract younger collectors," he said. Citing the 1999 appearance of Roger Taylor and Freddie Mercury on a commemorative stamp, Jennings added that the royal family should no longer appear on stamps. Though a group of children are due to appear on a new edition of stamps, the Post Office does not generally place people other than Royals on stamps unless they are no longer living. Hmmm… |
Beckham paid £1 million to wear shades Saturday, June 14,2001 |
|
David Beckham has signed a deal reportedly worth £1 million to endorse Police sunglasses. The star already has deals with adidas and Brylcreem which, when combined with his Manchester United wages, are reckoned to earn him over £3 million a year. Beckham said he agreed to this latest modelling deal because of his admiration for Italian style. He said: "These sunglasses have got a lot of Italian style about them and I just really lik them." As part of the London launch, Beckham was interviewed by BBC presenter Ray Stubbs who asked him questions about football and his favourite fashions. He said the flares favoured by former England boss Kevin Keegan during the 1970s were responsible for his early passion for fashion. Wearing a pinstriped suit and white roll-neck jumper, the soccer star said there was not any one person who inspired some of his more wacky outfits. He said: "If I see something I like I just wear it and don't care what other people think." |

Virtual Beckham released Thursday, June 07,2001 |
|
![]() |
Rage has released the virtual shot form the David Beckham Soccer that they are planning to release in December. The new shots can be found at http://www.gamespot.co.uk. Those impressive shots show him both with and without Mohican, so that his character model will be bang up-to-date when David Beckham Soccer hits the shelves later this year. The football superstar, whose popstar wife can beat him at Trivial Pursuit, is understandably thrilled with these early images: I am delighted to be involved in this fantastic new game. In my free time I love playing on computer games, like most footballers. In fact, it is strongly rumoured that Posh and Becks regularly engage in LAN deathmatches from the comfort of their modest homestead. David Beckham Soccer offers gamers the choice of hundreds of domestic and international squads and you can battle it out in a range of game modes. The England captain's role is far from superficial, however, as he features in a coaching capacity, teaching you the finer points of free kick taking, and possibly how to mumble and look embarassed during interviews. The MD of Rage, Paul Finnegan, is equally buoyant about the project: David Beckham is without doubt one of the finest footballers in the world today and we are delighted to be developing and publishing David's only officially endorsed range of computer and video games. Beckham has signed a three-year deal with Rage to develop a range of titles. David Beckham Soccer will be the first of these and is set for release on PSone, Game Boy and Game Boy Advance later this year. We'll bring you the first in-game shots when we have them, but for now check out Virtual Beckham. |
